In a collective effort, Lagos hoisted the Blue Flag on its beaches during a ceremony at Praia do Porto de Mós, attended by involved entities, recognising the quality of the municipality's beaches. This achievement is a testament to the community's dedication to maintaining the beaches' high standards.
Meia Praia, Porto de Mós, Batata, and Luz beaches have the Blue Flag and the Accessible Beach Flag.
These awards confirm that these beaches provide high environmental quality and are accessible to people with reduced mobility. The facilities include reserved parking, pedestrian access, walkways on the sand, and adapted toilets, meeting the main accessibility requirements.
QUERCUS (Environmental Non-Governmental Organization) also awarded the beaches of Luz, Porto de Mós, and Meia Praia the 'Gold Quality' award, which distinguishes bathing areas with an "Excellent" water quality rating over the last five years.
For the first time this year, these four beaches in the municipality are proudly flying the "Quality Coast" flag, an award supported by the European Commission. It is considered the most significant independent international certification for sustainable tourist destinations.
The Blue Flag is a symbol of environmental quality awarded annually to river and coastal beaches that meet specific criteria, including Environmental Information and Education, Water Quality, Environmental Management, Equipment and Safety, and Services.
Throughout the year, the municipality's schools held various activities to raise environmental awareness and promote healthy living, which will continue throughout the summer months on the municipality's beaches as part of the "Lagos in the Wave of Summer" campaign, also taking advantage of this year's theme of the Blue Flag programme "The Sea Needs Leaders! Your beach is your cause!", which warns of the need to change behaviour through various campaigns: against waste; for a reduction in the use of plastic; for the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems, dunes and the beach as a public space.
