Navigating healthcare in the Algarve as an expatriate involves understanding Portugal's healthcare system and determining the best coverage for your needs. Portugal offers both public and private healthcare options, each with distinct features.

Public Healthcare System (Serviço Nacional de Saúde - SNS)

The SNS is Portugal's public healthcare system, funded by taxes and social contributions. It provides comprehensive medical services to residents, including hospital stays, doctor consultations, preventive care and emergency services. However, dental care and cosmetic surgery are typically not covered (SchengenVisaInfo).

Accessing Public Healthcare as an Expat

To access the SNS, expatriates must register at their local health centre (Centro de Saúde) and obtain a healthcare number (Número de Utente). This process usually requires proof of legal residence and may involve obtaining a social security number (NISS). EU/EEA citizens can use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for urgent care during short stays, but for longer stays, registration with the SNS is necessary.

Private Healthcare Options

Private healthcare in the Algarve is widely available and offers benefits such as shorter waiting times and access to English-speaking medical professionals.

List of options (in no particular order):

  1. Hospital Particular do Algarve (HPA Health Group)
    • HPA is one of the leading private healthcare providers in the Algarve, with hospitals and clinics located across the region. Their services cover general healthcare, specialised care, surgeries, emergency services and diagnostic tests.
  2. CUF Descobertas Hospital
    • CUF is a well-established private healthcare provider in Portugal, with a presence in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve. The CUF Descobertas Hospital offers a wide range of medical services, including specialised consultations, surgery and diagnostic exams.
  3. Alvor Private Clinic
    • This clinic is located in the town of Alvor, in the western Algarve and offers a wide range of medical services, including general practice, emergency care and specialist consultations.
  4. Clínica Particular de Faro
    • Located in Faro, the Clínica Particular de Faro provides healthcare services for a range of medical needs, from general check-ups to specialised treatments. The clinic has a reputation for professional care and quality service.
  5. Lusíadas Saúde
    • Lusíadas is another major healthcare provider in Portugal with a network of hospitals and clinics throughout the country, including in the Algarve. They offer a wide array of medical services with an emphasis on high standards of care and state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Health Insurance for Expats

While the SNS offers extensive coverage, many expatriates opt for private health insurance to access private healthcare facilities and services not covered by the public system. Several private health insurance providers operate in Portugal, offering various plans to suit different needs and budgets.

The cost of private health insurance varies based on factors such as age, coverage level, and pre-existing conditions. Here's a general overview:

  • Young Adults: Premiums start at approximately €30 per month for basic coverage (Global Citizen Solutions)
  • Comprehensive Plans: For more extensive coverage, including hospitalisation and specialist consultations, premiums can range from €30 to €100 per month (International Living).
  • Older Adults: Couples in their 60s might expect to pay around €300 per month for high-end policies with low co-pays (International Living).

It's important to note that private health insurance in Portugal is generally more affordable compared to many other countries, and policies often come with no deductibles or low co-pays. Additionally, some insurers may cover certain pre-existing conditions, especially if continuous coverage can be demonstrated.

However, if you do not have any private health insurance, but still attend a high-end hospital, you can expect to pay a lot less than other countries; paying approximately €50 to see a general practitioner and €100 for a specialist.

Key Considerations

  • Language: Many healthcare providers in the Algarve speak English, especially in private facilities. However, in public healthcare settings, proficiency in Portuguese may be necessary.
  • Emergency Services: In case of a medical emergency, dial 112 for immediate assistance.
  • Pharmacies: Pharmacies (Farmácias) are widely available and can provide both prescription and over-the-counter medications. Pharmacists are knowledgeable and can assist with minor health concerns.
